India Web Accessibility Laws

India passed web accessibility guidelines for government agencies in 2009, compelling them to adhere to WCAG 2.0 Level A standards.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has released the “Model Website Accessibility Policy” for government websites, which highlights the importance of web accessibility and provides a principled guide for implementing accessible design and development practices.

In 2016, India enacted the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act which prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities. Although this law applies to both the public and private sectors, it currently has no standardized guidelines and does not explicitly specify web accessibility.

At EqualWeb, we recommend you remediate and audit your website against WCAG 2.1 guidelines to avoid any legal risk and to open your doors to the large population of individuals living with disabilities.
