Frame titles must tell frames apart

Rule frame-title-unique · Document, language & navigation · impact moderate · Static + live

↩ Back to the rules index · WCAG cross-reference

Why it matters

Screen readers list frames by title. Three frames all called "iframe", or two both called "Video", give the user no way to choose between them — the list becomes a set of identical entries and the only way forward is to enter each in turn.

How to fix

Title each frame after what it contains — "Location map", "Cookie preferences", "Product tour video" — and keep the titles distinct within a page. Do not use the word "frame"; the role is already announced.

Example

✕ Fails
<iframe title="iframe" src="/a"></iframe><iframe title="iframe" src="/b"></iframe>
✓ Passes
<iframe title="Location map" src="/a"></iframe><iframe title="Opening hours" src="/b"></iframe>
