PDF accessibility across Canvas

Every course PDF - syllabi, lecture notes, readings, forms - inventoried, scored against PDF/UA and WCAG rules, prioritized by legal exposure, and remediated with AI. The accessible copy is saved next to the original, which is never overwritten and never deleted.

No upload. No download. Direct file access.

  • LTI 1.3 - nothing installed at your institution
  • Early access
  • Zero LTI scopes - no roster, grades or student data

What you get

The full EqualWeb PDF Accessibility product, inside Canvas

A cloud-side LTI 1.3 integration - an administrator pastes one URL into Canvas's app wizard and EqualWeb appears in the course and account menus. Every document gets a 0-100 accessibility score against PDF/UA and WCAG rules, a detailed report at a permanent link, a legal-priority classification with a full audit trail - and one-click AI remediation whose result is saved back into the same course as a new file next to the original.

  • Nothing installed at your institution: no plugin, no server, no code of ours on your infrastructure - and updates deploy on our side
  • Zero LTI service scopes requested - the install wizard shows an empty permissions screen, because the tool never asks for rosters, grades or student data
  • Role-gated at the door: only Instructor, TA, Content Developer and Administrator launches are admitted - students are politely refused
  • The original file is never overwritten and never deleted - the accessible version is saved next to it as <name>-accessible.pdf
Minimum access, maximum transparency

What we see - and what we never see

  • What we get

Identity and the embed via LTI 1.3, plus a Canvas API token your administrator grants - used only for accounts, courses, folders and PDF files

  • Who approves

Your Canvas account administrator - a one-URL registration plus a token pasted once, encrypted with AES-256-GCM

  • What we never see

Rosters, enrolments, submissions, grades, quizzes, messages - and no names or emails are ever stored, only an opaque user identifier

Your files are never stored by the application tier - a document is streamed from Canvas to the EqualWeb audit service and released. Credentials are encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM) and never reach a browser. EqualWeb holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification; we complete HECVAT, DPA and VPAT/ACR paperwork as part of onboarding. Nothing is uploaded by hand and nothing is downloaded back - the accessible copy lands in the same course, next to the original.

How it works

Install in two minutes. Scan. Score. Prioritize. Remediate.

Skip the upload-download loop: register once, and every course PDF is checked, scored and remediated from one table inside Canvas.

  1. Register

Admin → Apps → Install a New App → LTI 1.3 Dynamic Registration - paste one URL. About two minutes, and the permissions screen shows zero requested services.

  2. Inventory & score

Every PDF across your courses is listed and checked against PDF/UA and WCAG rules - a 0-100 score plus a rule-by-rule report at a permanent link.

  3. Prioritize

Documents are ranked - required for a service, publicly published, internal, archive (possibly exempt - confirm) - with the exact rules behind every decision, so 40,000 PDFs become a ranked list.

  4. Remediate

One click sends a document to AI remediation - tagging, reading order, alt text, metadata - and the accessible version is saved into the same course next to the original.

How to install

The two-minute admin flow

Prerequisite: a root-account administrator on your Canvas instance. Nothing else.

  1. In Canvas go to Admin → your account → Apps → Manage → Install a New App.
  2. Choose LTI 1.3Dynamic Registration.
  3. Paste one URL: https://canvasllm.equalweb.com/register
  4. Canvas walks you through its wizard - the permissions screen will show no requested services, because we request none. Click Install App.
  5. EqualWeb PDF Accessibility now appears in the course and account navigation menus (visible to administrators).
  6. Open it once as an account administrator, paste a Canvas access token (and, optionally, the account id to scan) - that is the connection.
  7. The document inventory begins building immediately, and free checks are available at once.

Prefer to create the developer key yourself? Create an LTI key from our published JSON configuration at canvasllm.equalweb.com/config.json, turn it on, and add the app By Client ID - the resulting tool is identical. Removal is just as fast: delete the app in Canvas and revoke the token; access stops immediately.

FAQ

PDF accessibility in Canvas - common questions

Do you need access to student data, rosters or grades?
No, and we cannot obtain it. We request zero LTI Advantage service scopes - no Names and Role Provisioning, no Assignment and Grade Services. The permissions screen in the Canvas install wizard will show no requested services. The Canvas API endpoints we call are limited to accounts, courses, folders and files.
Will this overwrite our course files?
No. The accessible version is saved as a new file next to the original (name-accessible.pdf). The application never overwrites and never deletes an existing course file.
What exactly is installed on our servers?
Nothing. Installation is an LTI 1.3 registration in Canvas - an administrator pastes one URL into the Canvas app wizard, about two minutes. Removal is a deletion in Canvas plus revoking the access token; all access ends immediately.
